Projects
Projects that I completed during my MLIS program can be found below. Each project corresponds with the Learning Outcomes on the Courses & Specialization page.
Collection Analysis
LIS 60614 - PLO 1
As part of LIS 60614 I completed an assignment requiring me to perform a full evaluation of a collection in an actual library, wherein I utilized the statistical analysis techniques discussed in the course. Further, I supplied recommendations for improvement and an interpretation of the statistical findings. This is a functional practice that will be present in my professional career nearly every day.
Original MARC Record Creation
LIS 60602 - PLO 1
Cataloging is a task that is attentative to detail. LIS 60602 required that I compose an original MARC record on provided items previously selected by the professor. Our submission was graded on accuracy and preciseness gained from the concepts discussed during the course. This aligns with a task that is an everyday practice for library cataloging professionals.
Research Proposal
LIS 60050 - PLO 2
Cataloging is a task that is attentative to detail. LIS 60602 required that I compose an original MARC record on provided items previously selected by the professor. Our submission was graded on accuracy and preciseness gained from the concepts discussed during the course. This aligns with a task that is an everyday practice for library cataloging professionals.
Director's Memo
LIS 60040 - PLO 2
Not only did this assignment align with competencies regarding professional communication, it required the student to perform research and present it in a professional manner. A hypothetical situation was proposed where the director of an instution tasked the student with researching leadership styles and job satisfaction correlation. Upon completing the research, a memorandum was composed that consisted of the results and recommendations to be submitted to the director for their consideration. This required critique and synthesis of research findings in the workplace and presented a way to solve problems or answer questions, professionally, in the field.
Outreach Assignment & Service Component
LIS 61095 Information Services to Diverse Populations - PLO 3
The culminating project for this special topics course required submission of written work plus the performance of volunteer hours at an approved service site. In this assignment series, the student identified underserved groups in their community using demographic data, research current library outreach services, identify community partners, develop a resource handout for the identified underserved population, and propose a program or service for them. This assignment demonstrated the cultural, educational, and social roles that public libraries play in their communities.
Lesson Plans
LIS 60655 - PLO 4
Copyright culminated with an assignment requiring the student to compose two lesson plans that cover two areas of copyright literacy and to focus the content toward a user group of their interest (ie: faculty, student, public library users). This task utilized skills in evaluating systems relevant to information content, and furthered that by making the content instructional for the constituents of the institution.
Community Demographics Worksheet & Statistical Website Critiques
LIS 60614 - PLO 5
In order for an information institution to properly provide for their users they must be aware of their users needs. One step in that direction is exploring demographics. This assignment tasked the student with assessing the demographics of their library’s community, examining the potential needs based off of the results. Further, the statistical websites used to gather data were also critiqued, providing experience analyzing resources.
Program Proposal
LIS 60608 - PLO 5
A role of public libraries is offering programing for the users that connects to their information needs. To align with this, LIS 60608 culminated with a project that required a proposal of a program for a public library that they analyzed and studied. The student identified the needs of the individuals and proposed a program to fit those needs that would engage with the users.
